Cheap and abundant natural gas has fueled new investment in U.S. chemical production, including ethylene, a key plastics feedstock. U.S. Ethylene production grew approximately 10,000 Kilo-Tons Per Annum (KTPA) in the five years preceding 2020.
PLG Consulting recently revisited its projections for ethylene. Ethylene production and capacity are continuing to grow, but producers have eased off the accelerator as they take stock of all the planned expansions.
Even at a scaled-back version, the growth patterns remain impressive. Capacity is expected to grow by another 11,000 KTPA in the next 10 years and production is projected to grow but plateau around 39,000 KTPA.
Nevertheless, there is still a lot that can change with the cyclical nature of any global commodity such as ethylene. Stay tuned! To download more on the trends that are continuously reshaping the supply chain, click here.
