8. PLG Consulting Analysts Partner with EIA
Since 2010, rail has played an increasingly vital role in the transportation of energy products across North America, however, visibility had been limited into actual volume and key regional movements. That all changed in 2015 when a partnership between the Energy Information Administration (EIA) of the U.S. Department of Energy and PLG Consulting lead to the release of energy by rail movement data. The new reporting was the culmination of over seven months of work in which the EIA and PLG Consulting collaborated closely to help identify data sources, interpret data, and develop a methodology to detail energy by rail movements, both on a historical basis back to 2010 and for ongoing reporting. This closed a major gap in the understanding of the movement of energy products across North America and was a significant enhancement to EIA data reporting. The new data is now fully integrated into EIA’s monthly petroleum supply statistics which already includes movements by pipeline, tanker, and barge.
